SELECTING A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

It is a cliché to say your photographs are all you have left of your wedding, but it nonetheless remains true. Choosing your photographer is a very important decision. But how do you go about choosing one with so many around? Here are three important considerations when choosing a wedding photographer:

The first consideration is whether the photographer is a member of PPSA (Professional Photographers of Southern Africa). PPSA is the only professional organization for photographers in Southern Africa and membership is voluntary. Members submit a portfolio and are judged by a panel of judges. Membership not only ensures the expertise of the photographer but also protects the client. No one would allow a non-registered doctor to operate on them. Why allow a non-registered photographer to take the most important photographs of your life?!

The second consideration is the style of the photographer. Each photographer has his or her own style - traditional, photo journalistic or artistic. The only way by which one can really judge the style of a photographer is by looking at their portfolio. The ideal is to view several real-life weddings from which a selection of photographs are shown, not just the best photograph of every wedding.

The third consideration is whether you like your photographer. You must surely like the person and not be intimidated or irritated as you will be spending the greater part of your wedding day in his presence. Someone with a calming influence is by far preferable on such an emotionally laden day.
